Philosophy And Money- Understanding the Philosophical Aspects of Materialism
The guide to living a happier life.
Good morning everyone!
Everybody wants to make more money, But not everyone knows why. The essential question of why is what will make a difference in your life. If your goal in life is to buy an extravagant house and drive nice cars that is great.
But what happens when you finally meet those materialistic goals?
A midlife crisis. Something nobody wants to happen but often catches up to us in the least expected ways. For so many years, these people have dedicated their lives to materialism, so they have no idea what to do with themselves when they finally get what they want.
Today I wanted to arm you with the knowledge and tools, so you don’t have to get to this point and wonder why you’re even existing.
What is Philosophy?
The term "philosophy" comes from ancient Greek words meaning "love of wisdom."
Philosophy is the study of fundamental truths and knowledge and the analysis of concepts. It is also a way to explore what it means to be human.
Philosophy is not just about money, but it has a materialistic side that can be explored by philosophers. For example, understanding how money influences our society and how we spend it can help us understand ourselves.
Materialism in Society
Materialism is the belief that all that exists is material. It’s a worldview where people believe that what is most important about themselves are their physical possessions.
The term “materialism” was first used by Karl Marx in his 1859 Preface to A Contribution to a Critique of Political Economy. He wrote, “the mode of production of material life conditions the general process of social, political and intellectual life.”
Materialism has become one of the most influential ideologies in society today. It has become so important because it influences how people think and act around money, work, relationships, and happiness in general.
The Effects and Solution to Materialism
Materialism can cause many negative effects on our lives, such as increased stress levels and decreased self-esteem. It can also lead to more severe problems like depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
The solution to these problems is simple: live a happy life without materialism.
Easier said than done, am I right?
But it is easier than you might think. The first step to living a happier life without material possessions is to get rid of distractions. Things like social media and TV advertisements that promote buying equals happiness.
That step in itself will help you dramatically. If social media is not a problem for you, then that’s fine, but I don’t know many people who use social media daily and don’t struggle with some self-esteem issues.
Your happiness should be defined as something you value that is in your control, like creativity and intellect, rather than what you own.
Look at this example:
Jay Gatsby from the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
He is obsessed with his mansion and all the expensive things inside it, which he has acquired through dubious means. In one passage, he says that “I can’t even remember what I wanted them for.”
Life is too short for all the ridiculous things you want to buy. Stop and live in the moment from time to time and remember how lucky you are even to be born. I hope after reading this article that you realize the harmful effects of materialism.
Have a great day, and share this post with a friend that could use this advice : )
